Ceatec 2010: augmented reality ... by phone

Ceatec exhibition in Japan dedicated to consumer electronics, Docomo has just presented a screen built into a spectacle lens and connected to a mobile. Goal: show real time information in the manner of head-up displays for fighter aircraft. This prototype is just one of the surprises of this exhibition.

Before him, the street is lively.
Go about on the sidewalk passersby, topped with a huge pink arrow. It stretches over their heads, like a floating red carpet. There, it turns 90 degrees to the right, denoting a lane. Is she that must take this man to join his appointment. The clouds seem threatening him, he looked up to heaven. A weather map of the region settled over the city and it shows the forecast for the next hour.

The Japanese operator DoCoMo has just shown that application of the known principle of augmented reality at Ceatec exhibition, being held this week in Chiba, a suburb of Tokyo.
We must put on a pair of glasses with one lens is a tiny projector showing an image before the eye. The machine is connected to a mobile, the HT-01A, equipped with an accelerometer and electronic compass.

The device was designed by Olympus and this partnership is a recurrence since both companies had already showed in 2008 a prototype based on the same principle, but too heavy to be installed on a pair of glasses.

Mobile Madness

At Ceatec, other manufacturers have been imaginative. Kyocera also explores augmented reality goggles connected through a mobile or fixed on a transparent screen on the phone and swing. Fujitsu is classic with a mobile two hinged parts, opening like a book and discovering two touch screens dedicated to suit the user, different applications, such as privacy on one side (photos, Account facebook ...) and the other professional.

We saw Toshiba Regza TVs 3D GL1, displaying a 3D image visible without special glasses, and Sharp has finally found its touch pad Galapagos.
Finally, Panasonic launches Lumix range of Mobile Phone baptized. The brand name is the same as the cameras and the appellation is deserved since the functions and capabilities, including a 13.2-megapixel sensor and VGA screen of 3.3 inches (8.4 cm), are those of a camera.
