Google Cars

Google is testing a car without a driver

Certainly, Google is insatiable: behold the giant invading the Net ... Car Market! The Google Cars, to collect data for Street View service, are not the only vehicles on board which the Mountain View company. New cars made by Google have been spotted on roads in California: bristling with sensors, their driver ... not drive. It's onboard computer makes all the decisions, except the destination, the user entered into the GPS of the car. Seven cars have been equipped test by Google, and have traveled 1,600 km without human intervention and more than 225,000 km with a slight human assistance, according to The New York Times.

The cars, the Toyota Prius equipped with special roof rack, travel the roads, stopping at red lights, marking the stop to stop and respect the speed limit.
Many behaviors can be selected for artificial intelligence, conduct quiet aggressive driving. In case of unexpected event, the driver is alerted by a female voice. It can regain control by pressing a red button, or simply by pressing the brake or turning the wheel.

Computers behave well ...
when they do not plant

With their system of sensors that «see» 360 °, computers respond more quickly and surely to changing traffic, says Google.
They are not tired, distracted, drunk or drugged. The interest is threefold, insists the Web giant: it will save lives, increase road capacity and reduce fuel consumption. Indeed, the cars can drive closer to each other, and manufacturers can reduce the body in terms of reducing accidents.

If Google comes to increase the reliability of computers, which «crash» still too often to leave their lives in their hands, then the car self might emerge in the coming years. For now, Google maintains a driver behind the wheel if necessary, and an engineer on the passenger seat.
