The new SDI equalizer from National Semiconductor

It ensures that the video cables longer range market, with consumption reduced by half ...
PowerWise SDI equalizer (LMH0394) increases by 40% reach of broadcast video.

The new cable equalizer SDI (Serial Digital Interface, or Serial Interface Digital) National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM) extends the reach of video signal transmission of 40% (200m 3 Gb / s) despite a reduced consumption by half (115 mW typical) compared to equivalent equalizers.

The emergence of 3D TV, which requires a video capture stereoscopic camera with two independent force broadcasters to move to higher speeds (up to 3 Gb / s) to route video signals HD (high definition) between equipment . These higher speeds are problematic consumption and signal integrity over long distances. The LMH0394 these challenges by providing longer-range market for all rates supported: 200m 3-Gbps (3G), 220m and 400m in HD to SD (standard definition), all with lower power consumption. Until now, broadcasters used either copper cables associated with several distribution amplifiers (sort of signal repeaters), or more expensive optical solutions to increase the range of video equipment. 3GSDI allowing reception with just a coaxial cable of 200m, the National LMH0394 improves performance, reduces system complexity, the cost of the nomenclature (BOM) and power consumption. The LMH0394 eliminates the need for expensive solutions based on fiber optic outside plant over long distances (such as sporting events), which enables broadcasters to better leverage their existing coaxial facilities.

The low consumption of LMH0394 offers system designers the margin of consumption they need to add features like the audio processing, or re-synchronization of video input cards. The circuit also includes an automatic shut-off mode, in the absence of input signal, reduces fuel consumption by 85%.

In addition, the LMH0394 offers the lowest level of jitter over the entire range of cable lengths, allowing designers to meet the constraints of system jitter. The value of jitter is typically less than 0.15 UI (unit intervals) up to 100m, 140m up to 0.20 IU, 0.40 IU and up to 180m 3G speeds. The low output jitter of the LMH0394 also avoids the need for a re-entry lock in the case of short connections, further reducing consumption. The advanced features of the LMH0394 includes drivers LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling, or low voltage differential signaling) to offset, amplitude and programmable de-emphasis, a length indicator cable capable of estimating the length of the cable within about 1m, and support for external passive splitters. These enhanced features are accessible via the programming interface SPI LMH0394.Available in 16-pin LLP ® package of 4 x 4 mm, the LMH0394 is backward compatible with the family of National SDI equalizers.

A dual output version (LMH0395) is also available. The LMH0395 has a very low power consumption, only 145 mW at 2.5V. The two outputs of the circuit avoids the use of an external buffer 1:2, further reducing consumption and system cost. Each output can be independently validated and programmed to drive downstream devices with different input constraints and various trace lengths. The LMH0395 is packaged in a miniature 24-pin LLP, 4 x 4 mm.

Price and Availability

The LMH0394 is priced at 21.95 dollars per unit, and the LMH0395, 22.95 dollars each, in quantities of 1000 pieces. Both channels are sampled now with production quantities scheduled for October 2010.
