A powerful zoom in the compact Panasonic TZ20, The new compact high-end brand incorporates a push to 16 times zoom, a touch screen and GPS.
It's a little chestnut from the beginning of the year: Panasonic updates its series of compact lights, TZ, represented today by the new TZ18 and TZ20, with a 14.1 megapixel sensor - the second being the crème de la crème. Devices that have built their reputation on the integration of a strong zoom. And these new versions are no exception, since the zoom power is here ... 16 times. Therefore a focal length that extends 24 mm (very wide angle) to 384 mm (very strong zoom). Like a bridge back three to four years, in fact! At this optical zoom, which Panasonic has the secret Japanese brand digital zoom adds intelligent, this value grows to 20 times on the TZ18 and TZ20 about 21 times. Everything is controlled by the Power OIS, an excellent optical image stabilization system developed by the manufacturer.
New sensors
Two devices, two sensors: a CCD for conventional TZ18, TZ20 for the MOS. The difference? A quality classic video (MJPEG) for the first AVCHD for the second, a simple 720p for TZ18 and a beautiful Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels 50i (interlaced) for the TZ20. And above a rate of shooting incredibly high for this last: 10 frames per second (15 images maximum), full resolution, while the TZ18 is running a more traditional, at 1.9 fps s. It was indeed a little boost TZ20 against devices like the Sony HX5V (read review), which will soon have a successor.
The change in continuity
As the TZ10, TZ20 integrates the GPS, which would, according to Panasonic, was greatly improved. Hopefully: the last emptied the battery in no time and had the greatest difficulty in capturing the satellite signal ... But there is a drama: the screen remains at 460 000 points on the TZ20 and tops out at 230,000 points on the TZ18. In both cases, it is very, even too true: and the TZ7 TZ6 these definitions already proposed two years ago!
A touch screen for TZ20
The TZ20 saves a bit of honor is the first device in the TZ range to incorporate a touch screen, a technology that seems decidedly pleasing Panasonic (read tests of G2 and GH2 on our news and GF2). But it is always possible to control the machine with the buttons (phew!).
The TZ18 and TZ20 will be available later in March, respectively at 299 and 399 USD. In this segment, where new competitors are not lacking, it will be treated as Panasonic has the image quality front, including a Sony in great shape in the photo ...
