The integrated sensor compact Si7005 reduces system complexity and costs in applications monitoring and controlling humidity and temperature ...

Silicon Laboratories Inc. (NASDAQ: SLAB), a leader in integrated circuits for high performance, mixed-signal and high density analog, today introduced a solution called "sensor on a chip" with dual digital sensor relative humidity (RH) and temperature on a single-chip. The new sensor Si7005 is a notable advance in the field of detection relative humidity by combining a mixed signal integrated circuit fabricated in standard CMOS technology with a proven technique for measuring the moisture with a dielectric film polymer. It's perfect for surveillance applications and humidity control such as climate control in the car and demisting systems, air conditioning, refrigeration, weather stations, food processing, printers, traceability of assets and medical devices such as misters, oxygen concentrators and respiratory therapy equipment.

The classical approaches for detecting relative humidity make use of discrete sensor elements, resistive and capacitive, and multichip and hybrid modules (MCM). These solutions suffer from a historic high hardware cost (BOM) because of the large number of components, large enclosures, manufacturing challenges and the need for a custom calibration very main time demand and human resources. The humidity sensor Si7005 is per cons, smaller,
more reliable, and easier to integrate them and use only classics discrete solutions.

The humidity sensor Si7005 is a solution of RH and temperature sensing, calibrated at the factory, of type «plug-and-play. » Its digital output and factory calibration frees the developer of these tasks and, at the same time the sensor Si7005 becomes completely interchangeable. Neither logician update nor re-calibration is required to move from one sensor unit to another. The user no longer needs to adjusting each piece on the manufacturing line, which facilitates the production, repair and service. The compact case QFN of the sensor Si7005 supports packaging in tape on roller (tape-and-reel), laying per automated robot (pick and place) and the conventional processes of brazing, which further reduces production costs for OEMs.

The sensor Si7005 uses the most modern technologies for accurate detection of humidity and temperature. The temperature sensing is done through a reference circuit on the chip accuracy. Humidity is detected by measuring a change in capacitance in a dielectric layer having a low coefficient k applied to the surface of the chip. The temperature and humidity are measured by functions very close on the same chip, providing exceptional measuring accuracy. The component sensor Si7005 is the RH sensor with the lowest power consumption in his category, with only 2 µA average per measurement per minute, which makes it ideal for battery-powered applications.

The BOM total solution for HR sensor Si7005 only two bypass capacitors, compared to dozens of components often required to perform the same functions as a discrete approach. The device sensor Si7005 integrates the sensor elements, an analog-digital converter (ADC), the signal processing, a nonvolatile memory for calibration data and an I2C interface on a monolithic CMOS integrated circuit. This high level of integration makes the sensor robust and reliable, reducing costs and development time and simplifies the design of the electronic card.

Silicon Labs has also developed an innovative solution to the problems of vulnerability to degradation and contamination encountered by conventional sensors. The component sensor Si7005 is available as an option, with a filter / protective cap installed at the factory, which isolates the sensor from the liquid and the particles before, during and after assembly and during its entire life. This filter removes the innovative material costs and human resources associated with competing solutions, and has no impact on the measurement sensitivity.

« The humidity sensor Si7005 provides a unique combination of ease of implementation, reliability, small size, low power consumption and compatibility with the assembly process industry standard », said Mark Thompson, vice president and general manager of Access products, Power and Sensor Silicon Labs. «The sensor Si7005 is the only component sensor digital temperature and humidity available today with a diversified supplier in semiconductors. Silicon Labs offers a wide range of mixed-signal integrated circuits complementary, since the low power microcontrollers with transmitter / receiver Wireless to open the way for solutions to achieve wireless sensor nodes and other applications for the Internet objects. »

The humidity sensor Si7005 is the latest growing catalog of products in Silicon Labs sensors, including capacitive sensors, ambient light sensors and proximity sensors for temperature-based microcontrollers, sensors AC power isolated and sensors of DC power high-side.
