Track a suspect by its WiFi connection, too easy for the NSA!

Canadian intelligence services have lent a hand to their American counterpart to test a new system of geolocation surveillance. Causing a pretty scandal in caribou country.

For those who still do not know what use the Big Data, Edward Snowden document, which has just been revealed by the public broadcaster CBC News, gives some valuable information. Dated May 2012, This paper presents a life-size test a new method of location-based surveillance wifi connections, conducted as part of a collaboration with the NSA and other members of the club spies Five Eyes.

Thus, we learn that the Canadian intelligence service CSEC collected data for two weeks Wifi connection in an international airport, probably Toronto or Vancouver. This allowed him to recover technical data of mobile devices used by passengers and create a database of identifiers (based on MAC addresses for example).

Comparing these identifiers with those collected in other hotspots (hotels, internet café, library, U.S. airports, etc..) spies show how it is possible to track the movements of a person in the past or in the future.

Analysis of data also shows, graphically, how users use the wifi in the different types of hotspots. Connections at airports prove such pretty unique and ephemeral, while those in an Internet café are already more regular (regulars who return ...).

In a second test, the Canadian intelligence agency has set the bar higher: it penetrated both communications systems and saved connections over 300,000 active users in a medium-sized city, in order to identify them from a fictional kidnapper. result: it is possible, provided that a number of well-calibrated algorithms. The problem is that the calculations were too long to be useful!

But in the meantime, this barrier seems it was evacuated. According to sources CBC techniques tested in 2012 are now fully operational. To get there, the spies have used the latest technologies. The document in fact recommends the use of databases or in-memory storage system called "column".

In Canada, this story caused a scandal. Under Canadian law, CSEC's mission is to conduct intelligence operations only abroad by intercepting communications or monitoring the Internet traffic. Monitoring Canadian citizens is not permitted without the approval of a court decision.
