Firefox 4.0 Beta 3: multitouch in action "video"
This new version of the Mozilla browser supports the Windows 7 multitouch and improves handling of Javascript code.
Released a new beta every two weeks. It is the goal set for Mozilla Firefox 4.0 development. The foundation holds up the pace with a third beta, available for download since yesterday evening, for Windows, Mac and Linux.
This new stage is an opportunity for Mozilla to include in its browser in Windows 7 multitouch. This is the only outstanding innovation of the third beta, outside of multiple adjustments, including Mozilla published the list online, to improve stability and speed of the browser.
The work of the foundation on the multitouch back more than a year now. But this is the first time she also integrates advanced version of its browser.
At this stage, the interest on a multitouch computer is however questionable. Few computers have a touch screen and web applications by leveraging even fewer. However, the demonstration made by Mozilla and is worth a look once again illustrates the evolution of browsers.
The preview video released by the foundation, combining photos and video handled with the fingertips, rather dramatically demonstrates these new opportunities. "Remember that all this happens in a Web page," recalls Paul Rouget in this clip, one of the "tech evangelists" Mozilla.
The implementation of multitouch is based on the latest developments in web standards, CSS3, HTML5 (canvas tag), Webm, etc..
In a second video, Felipe Gomes, one of the founding developers, demonstrates the capabilities of multitouch for Windows 7, including the possibility of distinguishing the seizure to the finger or stylus. We note that the function takes into account both the movement of several fingers, until four in the video.
Mozilla hopes to at least test the interest with multitouch Firefox users. This is also the goal of this release cycle of beta very close: gather as many witnesses and involve users in software development. Mike Beltzner, Firefox project manager, and welcomes each day to collect 3 000 4000 feedback and have more than 500,000 beta testers.
Without giving more details, he suggests that new functions are expected in the next two beta of Firefox 4.0. Then, developers will focus on the stabilization of the software before the release of a release candidate (almost final version), expected mid-October.
