The chances of having grandchildren can go up in smoke ...

Smoking_reduces_future_father

Smoking reduces the fertility of the future father and mother but also that of their children by reducing the quality of its germ cells. Enough to really want to quit smoking, right?

Smoking is bad for health and fertility .... A priori there is nothing very new ... However, two studies recently published in the Journal Human Reproduction give a more unexpected question. The authors, in fact, it shows why the future fathers should refrain from smoking, as well as expectant mothers.

Mothers first. Smoking during pregnancy is bad for the unborn child. Less well oxygenated, it also absorbs all the harmful substances emitted by maternal smoking. But not only. The smoking mother would significantly reduce the number of germ cells for the production of sperm or ova, but also of somatic cells present in the gonads (ovaries or testes). Once an adult, the child would know to turn to reproductive difficulties.

Sperm less fit

The fathers too. The authors of the second study, in turn, highlight the effect of smoking on protamines. These proteins play an important role in sperm development. Thus, the chances of fertilization for the partner of a smoker is reduced. The risk of miscarriage is also increased by smoking of the father.

Conclusion: the more a man smoked, the lower his sperm is fertile. Moreover, some messages displayed on cigarette packets the right to say: Smoking can damage sperm and reduce fertility. What we do not know is that this risk could pass from one generation to another.
