This version 1 M is also distinguished by an innovative optimizing the aerodynamic qualities: air curtains influencing the drag and downforce in highly dynamic driving situations. These air curtains, or Air Curtains, inaugurated here on a production car, improve the flow of air through the wheel arches where they significantly reduce air turbulence. This trick aerodynamic includes openings in the outer parts of the front bumper through which incoming air is channeled into two pipes about 10 cm high and 3 cm wide. They are designed so that the flow of air flows in a closed channel along the inside of the shield to vent into the wheel when it came to high speed by a very narrow light along the outer flanks of wheels. Like a curtain, air knife laterally outward covers the front wheels, hence the name curtain air or Air Curtain.
The air flow dynamics covering the front wheels eliminates eddies and whirlpools at the wheel arches. Air curtains are causing a reduction in aerodynamic drag. The principle of the air curtain was unveiled for the first time on the study BMW Vision EfficientDynamics presented at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in 2009.The designers of the BMW 1 Series Coupe M were based on this work and have adapted this device to a production car. Air curtains have been developed in Aerolab the new Centre for aerodynamic testing of BMW Group that tests of motor size in a particularly realistic. The manufacturer does not specify the gain Cx provided by this device.
